Boy, I gotta say, that is one jungle of a garden! It’s awesome! Growing vertically seems to be the way to go. Did you have any problems with hail? That’s my #1 garden wrecker. Keep on posting – I’m excited to see what you do this next year!

We were lucky and only saw a couple hail storms resulting in minor damage. I’m sure there’s a way to help protect from it, but I haven’t thought it out too much yet. :-D

HI I google found you because I am trying to resolve a mystery.. Maybe you can help

I live in Switzerland.. I April I planted my balcony flowers, then I bought 2 packs of carnation seeds and just sprinkled the seeds around…

Well sure enough soon I saw green peaking up but then I noticed the leaves didn’t all look like my carnation plants that were planted

some were needle long (like the carnations) but some were well fuzzy and another was jagged

I dont know what it is.. Or where they came from.. Are they weeds that should be pulled?

I do have a bird feeder handing on my balcony and the birds had a seed fight I had to clean up my balcony it was covered in seed as were my boxes for my flowers

could this be where they came from?

right now it is a mystery if only I could ID them..
    one,two

there is also some picture on my post (before the me me one, in Novy news)

My advice is to pull them! The one in the first picture actually looks like a clump of grass that we call “Quack Grass” here in Alberta. It’s an invasive plant and can be quite hard to get rid of. It sends roots out under the ground that can spread very quickly and even a tiny piece of root left will re-propagate into more annoying grass. The only place I let that grass stay around is in the half of my front yard my dog runs around in because she likes to eat the quack grass.

The second picture – I’m not too sure what that is. If your local birds had a birdseed fight near your pots, that new plant could be from anywhere. If it is a plant native to your area, perhaps try matching the leaves up with your local trees.

It could turn out to be a tree seedling. I am forever pulling maple tree seedlings from my Camrose garden as there is a maple tree right beside it.

There are a number of plant databases online you can search as well like over at the Dave’s Garden website: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/

    thanks for your advice

I pulled and repotted them on there own pots

that way when they bloom if they are indeed something I want to keep then I can replant them but I doubt it

I have another question… because I haven’t found much help in the care sheets

I have a large lavender plant… (potted)When I got it in April it shot up growing with a sudden growth spurt causing green shoots to shoot up past the light pale green leaves

I thought it was about to bloom as these looked like the bloom shoots I have seen around with other lavender plants

but it didnt instead the shoots fell so now it looks like a hanging plant (that droopy look)

the leaves are green and healthy but I thought Lavender grew straight up and didnt droop like a spider plant or other hanging plants

I live in Switzerland btw and we have had some strange cool and wet weather lately with only one week with the sunny being bright and today all the rest cold and wet

as I said the Lavendar hasnt flowered unlike the ones that all my neighbors has and they don’t droop.

theirs are in their yards of course and mine is in a large pot

so it worries me that I am doing something wrong though the leaves are healthy and look beautiful
when I first got it no growth
and another when I first got it no growth

    2 week later – growth

    droopy no flowers
